What Is Temporary Protected Status (TPS)?

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a U.S. immigration status granted to nationals of certain countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions that prevent safe return. Designated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), TPS allows beneficiaries to stay and work legally in the U.S. for a specified period without fear of deportation. TPS does not lead to permanent residency but can be extended based on conditions in the home country. Recipients must meet eligibility requirements, including continuous U.S. residence and no serious criminal history. TPS beneficiaries can apply for travel authorization but must re-register periodically.
