Building for Growth in New Jersey with ICIC, Kean University, and NJEDA: A Free Executive Education Program Helping Construction Businesses Scale

New Jersey construction contractors looking to grow their businesses and compete for larger public and private projects can access a proven, no-cost opportunity through Building for Growth (BFG) in New Jersey. Building for Growth is a nationally recognized executive education program designed to help construction companies increase capacity, strengthen financial systems, and achieve sustainable growth.

The program is delivered by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) in partnership with Kean University and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA). Rooted in ICIC’s mission to break barriers, build businesses, and strengthen communities, the program supports contractors located in or serving over-burdened communities throughout New Jersey.

Building for Growth is offered as a hybrid program that blends in-person learning at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, with virtual sessions via Zoom. Participants complete 18 weekly two-hour classes, along with technical assistance and long-term mentorship. The total weekly commitment averages three to four hours, making the program accessible for business owners managing active construction operations.

The curriculum focuses on the most critical drivers of construction business growth. Contractors learn how to increase bonding capacity by working directly with bonding agents, improve capital readiness by strengthening financial documentation and planning, and build a reliable project backlog through refined growth strategies and connections with large general contractors and corporate partners. Each participant develops or enhances a customized business plan designed to support scalable operations.

To be eligible for the New Jersey cohort, companies must be independent, for-profit construction businesses headquartered in New Jersey or performing a significant portion of their work in the state. Eligible firms must also be located in or represent an over-burdened community. Contractors unsure of their eligibility are encouraged to apply or contact ICIC for guidance.

Since 2022, Building for Growth has supported 342 construction businesses across 35 states, including more than 60 graduates in New Jersey. Participants report measurable outcomes, including improved financial systems, increased bonding capacity, expanded project pipelines, entry into prime contracting roles, and revenue growth.

The New Jersey cohort runs from April 15 through August 19, with limited seats and rolling admissions. For construction businesses ready to scale with confidence, Building for Growth in New Jersey offers a trusted, cost-free pathway to long-term success.
